International Year of Sanitation

This year, the UN declared 2008 the International Year of Sanitation.  One of the UN’s Millenium Goals is to half the number of people who do not have access to basic sanitation by 2015.  That may seem like a lofty goal considering the estimate of people without basic sanitation today is 2.6 billion.  But every effort makes a difference.  Every person who helps changes a life.  Let’s join this International Year of Sanitation by making a difference in Rwanda!

For those of you interested in sustainability, environmental stewardship and living “green”, you may be wondering, “What is an eco-toilet?” And for those of you who don’t really care…maybe you will still think this is interesting.

In a nutshell, eco-toilets use human waste to create fertilizer. Instead of allowing the waste to seep into the water table and compromise the health of entire communities, the waste is pumped out and made into fertilizer to help nourish entire communities.

For more information on eco-toilets and how they work, you can read a couple of interesting reports about projects in India:
